Visual Artsist Residency
Support & Expectations
We’re excited to host artists in our rural community of Liberal, Kansas. During your residency, we provide space, support, and stipends so you can focus on creating and connecting with the community.
Residency Length
Residencies are generally two weeks in length.
Shorter or longer stays may be considered by request, based on availability, project scope, and scheduling.
What We Provide
Up to $500 travel reimbursement (submit receipts for airfare or mileage, gas, shuttle, or rental car)
$20 per day food stipend (flat rate, paid directly to you)
Up to $1,000 project/material reimbursement for your residency project
Must be submitted in advance and approved by the board before purchasing
Free private living quarters including:
Bedroom/Bathroom
Kitchen
On-site shared laundry (no extra cost)
Studio & Equipment Access at the Arts Center:
Visual art studio space
Digital arts computers (including photo editing & design software)
Gallery, demo spaces, and creative equipment as available
Support from Baker staff to schedule and promote your community demonstration/class
What We Ask in Exchange
To help us grow our creative community, we ask each Artist in Residence to participate in the following:
Participate in 1–3 public-facing events (depending on length of stay)
These may include teaching classes, workshops, live demonstrations, artist talks, open studios, or similar community-focused activities.
Programming will be planned collaboratively, based on the artist’s interests, strengths, and project focus.
Participate in a Baker Gallery show and public reception
(Preferably during your residency, but may be scheduled for a later date if needed.)
Artwork must be gallery-ready, including framing when necessary, clearly labeled, and prepared for installation.
The public reception will be hosted by Baker Arts and provide an opportunity to connect with the community.One donated original artwork
Given at the conclusion of your residency for our permanent collection or fundraising use.

Application Requirements
When applying, artists should submit:
Portfolio – A selection of current work (digital images preferred).
Previous Experience – List of shows, exhibits, workshops, or residencies.
Short Artist Statement – Explaining how your art will benefit our community.
Proposal for Permanent Collection Piece – Include a short description of the proposed work to be donated to the Baker Arts Center’s permanent collection.
